I am thrilled to formally introduce Dock Energy Inc. to the broader clean energy community. The Dock platform is a comprehensive software that helped CleanCapital grow from a startup to one of the top ten commercial solar asset owners in the country. Now, the platform will be made available to companies across the clean energy industry to simplify project development and asset management processes.

As a technologist, product builder and user advocate with CleanCapital, I had the pleasure of working alongside the best in the industry, which allowed us to blend clean energy finance and management expertise with creative software solutions.

How it started

Dock’s story begins like most startups: in a bar over drinks, sketching ideas on napkins. I met CleanCapital’s founder and CEO Thomas Byrne in New York City one late summer afternoon in 2016. At the time, I was working at Elasticsearch, a billion-dollar software unicorn that processes massive amounts of data to support developers. Thom had a brilliant visionto bring investor capital into clean energy at scale to accelerate the clean energy transition.  To make that possible, we needed a new kind of digital round table for all types of usersfrom sellers to investors and attorneys to advisors so they could cohesively work together. And just like that, Dock was created. Fast forward to today: Dock has supported over $1 billion in clean energy transactions, encompassing more than 230 solar projects and 440 MW of clean renewable power with over 1,300 users.

How it’s going

After seven years of serving the needs of the CleanCapital team, along with its deal counterparties and external consultants, Dock Energy is spinning off as an independent company. Honed by years of user feedback and product improvements, we are now poised to offer this software solution to a wider range of customers in the clean energy space.

Solving problems together

Clean energy has progressed in the last year, but oil and gas consumption are still at an all-time high and the transition to renewable energy needs to happen faster. While global investment in renewable energy reached a record high in 2022 at $500 billion, it represents less than 40% of the average investment needed each year between 2021 and 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Trillions of dollars of new private capital are ready to be deployed into the energy transition, but capital alone is no panacea. Today, the stakeholders in the transition face:

  • Ephemeral documents and inefficient information in data silos
  • Increased costs and extended timelines due to workflow bottlenecks
  • High transaction and operational costs due to inefficiencies and lack of proper tools
  • Go-to-market is time and labor intensive
